I use Lil'Gun and the Hornady V-MAX 40 gr in both rifle but have never tried them for calling Yotes. Brent Ammo is currently produced by Hornady , Federal and Winchester , with bullets ranging in weight from 15½ grains to the huge 25-grain pill; I’d opt for the 20 and 25 grainers for coyote hunting. Even the 22 hornet won't anchor a dog with consistency, the 223 with 50-55 GR super explosive projectiles is more consistent and gives a bit better range limit. We will be discussing about their ballistic performances, which is a better choice for plinking, small game, and varmint hunting. No (low) recoil, low noise. The 17, I'm sure, has it's attributes, I personally don't think coyote is one of it's strong points! The best .22-250 rifle will be more than just a coyote gun though, and while it’s perfect for that particular application, the best .22-250 Remington rifles are more than a single note performer.
A rodent cartridge is invading Coyoteville. I'm looking to pick up a new rifle and would enjoy hearing some opinions on which one to get between the 22 Hornet and 204 Ruger. Just put the round where it belongs (lungs) and the results should be good. The .22 Hornet has the potential, especially when handloaded, to handle anything from a squirrel up to coyotes. My father and I usually make an annual trip to Afognak Island in late November or December, and the highlight for me is hunting the gorgeous foxes that roam the beaches. I also read a magazine article that said the 22 Hornet “was” the “first choice” for coyote hunting, because a 223 causes too much hide-fur damage (if a person is selling hides) but a 223 can be “hand loaded” with “less powder” to about equal a 22 Hornet. However, the body of evidence also indicates that both cartridges are very effective on predators, small game, and varmints. We will also be considering the price vs benefits test among the 22 LR and 17 HMR. The TSX is a very good performing bullet. The 22 hornet will slay a coyote just fine. I think I have temporarily stepped back from the edge on my recent burning desire to buy a new varmint rifle in .223. Similar to the 10mm vs .45 ACP debate, the .223 Remington has more energy remaining at 200 yards than many .22 Hornet loads have at the muzzle. Simply the good old .22 Hornet necked down to hold .172” bullets, the .17 Hornet uses light-for-caliber bullets to achieve respectable velocities.
